File sharing is the sharing and transmitting of computer data on a network or online with various access levels (Margomin, 2016). Files that can be shared on this network range from multimedia(audio, images, videos), computer programs and applications such as games besides other files such as electronic books. File sharing can be done manually through removable media, servers that centralized or www hyperlinks as well as peer to peer Networking.
On the other hand, According to Margomin (2016), peer to peer or P2P networking is sharing of computer programs online through a network of software programs. Within the network are computers and servers; which are also known as nodes. It is from this computers that users search for content.  All this is made possible because of the existence of digitization of media and content.
Among the factors that have led to the popularity of the file sharing technologies include the widespread and increase in internet bandwith, the quality and capabilities of computers has also increased a great deal as well as digitization of content as mentioned above. As such this has led to increase in platforms and programs for P2P sharing such as Gnutella, Bittorrent protocol, Utorrent, pirates Bay among others.
