Privacy and Confidentiality in the new media
It is difficult to discuss privacy and confidentiality with new media without explicitly defining what the two terms actually mean. Privacy refers to the need for one to seclude some information from other people and keep the same to themselves. Every person has a right to keep some degree of information to themselves and not have it exposed it to public. As such, privacy revolves around an individual. However, confidentiality exists between two people. Confidentiality is about not exposing private information entrusted between the parties to a third party.
Privacy and confidentiality are a very critical aspect in the modern world of the new media. Today most people have social media accounts be it, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc. As one signs up for this account, one is needed to provide information that one may deem private. Much of this information given is information that one would not give in public. For instance, Facebook asks for credit and debit card information when one wants to use Facebook ads. This is private information that needs to be granted utmost protection from unauthorized person. This is where confidentiality comes in. Confidentiality makes it an obligation of Facebook has to ensure  this information does not fall into the wrong hands thereby enhancing identity theft. In responding to such issues Facebook and other social media platforms have Privacy settings. Such settings allow users to determine whether their post can go public or not. Facebook, for instance, has a 'Tagging' button, this button allows the user to share posts with specific people. This same case applies to Instagram and many other social media platforms like twitter.
Privacy and confidentiality are related especially as regards the new media. The new media platforms owners have played an integral role in ensuring that they enhance privacy settings that can be used for this purpose.

  1. Yasar, I agree with you that privacy is a growing issue in our society especially with the implementation of apps like Facebook and Twitter. people need to know that their personal information is safe and the responsibility falls on the companies offering these services. They need to keep our information confidential and make sure that nothing goes terribly wrong. I'm glad to see that another student in the class seems to think similarly about such a relevant topic in our society.

  2. Yasar, I completely agree with you that user's private information should be protected and safe. I remember this one time I put in my credit card information on Facebook Ads and I deleted my information from Facebook a few weeks later but almost a year later I saw two charges on my card of significant amounts from Facebook. It's disappointing that something like that would happen and it sucks to think that my information that I put in with the hope of it being confidential, it turns out that it wasn't. It's Facebook's responsibility to protect our informations but they haven't been doing that great of a job to do so.
