Modeling Reality with Virtual Words
Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds
Human beings are visual creatures and hence visual technology has
been a viable area of technological advancement in the recent years. This has
led to the emergence of creation of Virtual Worlds to model reality. The
creation of Virtual world has led to enhancement of accomplishment of various
tasks that humans cannot achieve because of physical laws limitation. For
instance, Virtual Worlds can be used in Military, Academia, Medical Field,
Movie and Entertainment (THCBMedia, 2008). It can be used to travel to places
we have never been and give us a feel of the place. Hence, Virtual World
Technology uses computers to simulate real world environments thereby creating
a virtual reality experience. However, Virtual Worlds have pros and cons and
below they are outlined:-
Pros
Socializing
Virtual world offers an opportunity for people to virtually meet
new people such as Dwight Shelford in ‘The Office’ and also socialize with them
other than just play games (THCBMedia, 2008). For instance, in the
‘Second Life’ Clip, it is clear that virtual world enhances socializing with
people that would otherwise be almost impossible to meet and interact with in
real life (THCBMedia, 2008). As such, through this socialization relationships
are forged and people are able to even help each achieve simple tasks in life
such as creating resume.
Medical field
It is possible to analyze
people’s data on Health because of the computerization of medical records as
such it easy to track and study of diseases. In the class YouTube clip about
‘The Office’, we get to meet Dwight Shelford who has extraordinary abilities
though in the Virtual World. He can look at anyone’s psychiatric and surgery
records among other things (Funky, 2007).
Military
In the military Virtual World technology has been very key
especially in not only training new soldiers but also creating simulations that
can be used to explore new horizons of military activity (Lynch, 2018).
Gaming and Entertainment
This is one of the areas that Virtual World Technology has enhanced
experiences beyond images. VIrtual World technology through Augmented reality
turns fantasy into reality. A good example is the Apple AR games, where you can
get the characters of the game to the floor of the real environment.
Cons
Little Flexibility
As much as Virtual world allows for interaction the scope of this
interaction is limited as would be the case in the real world. In the Real
world we can ask questions and have them answered and even make suggestions
(Lynch, 2018).
Addiction to the virtual
world
It possible to get addicted to the virtual world and lose
connections with the real world. For instance, since the games in the virtual
world give a different and very interesting touch of virtual reality one could
find themselves so glued to this and loosing real communication with real
people that fosters real relationships; which are an integral part of life
(Schechter, 2015).
Low Acuity
One of the challenges that virtual World suffers is graphical
presentation low perceptual quality. This erodes the experience of virtual
realism. Among the negative characteristics that pull back this technology
include; legibility issues brought about by poor color resolutions, distorted
perception of colors as well as limited contrast (Schechter, 2015).
How virtual Worlds shape
creativity
The scope of how far virtual worlds can go is only limited to
human imagination (Lynch, 2017). As such Virtual worlds are going to shape and
sharpen creativity as experts in programing and computer simulation will seek
to open up their imagination to the wide spectrum of application that this
technology can be applied to. For instance, computer simulators are targeting
the real estate industry to come up with simulations for housing structures. As
such, one may be able to visualize a virtual reality simulation of the type of
the house they would want in terms of architectural and completed structural
designs way before they even have it constructed.
Future of Virtual World
Bright, cannot be a sufficient adjective to describe the future of
Virtual World. There is so much that the technology holds for the future. For
instance with virtual world it will be possible to not only travel into the
future but also back into the History (Schechter, 2015). In academia, virtual
world will be a powerful tool because students will be able to make visits to
virtual places they have never before. Another, area in which the future of
Virtual World is going be advanced, is the aspect of increasing the spectrum of
sensories so as to appeal to other senses other than visual sense. Things will
just get more physical.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Virtual Worlds, will revolutionize the way we view
things, the places we have visited, communication and the relationships we have
had and we are going to have in the future. There are pros and cons of this
technology but certainly the cons do not outweigh the pros. As such, virtual
worlds should continue to reveal virtual reality and make it more real.
