Blog About Twitter
There are several
differences and similarities that can be drawn from comparing twitter with
class discussion board. Firstly, while in twitter, we tweet our opinion and
just about anything in our minds. In the class Board we do posts that are
focused on the weekly discussions that are centered on the course work.
Secondly, twitter needs one to have a twitter handle, which must start with an
‘@’. However with the class discussion board our names usually appear on top of
every discussion, as such we do not need handles as those ones used on twitter.
Thirdly, our class discussion board are not limited to the length of a post
that one can actually post. As a matter of fact the class discussion board
allows for attachment of documents that may be upto a certain number of MBs.
With twitter, tweets are limited to 280 characters. In my view this may at time
hamper the message that one may want to convey. Twitter is not for the ‘too
wordy’ people.
Forth, in our class
discussion board we rarely use hashtags to identify trending discussions.
However, on twitter, not using Hashtags can makes tracking discussions and
trending topics really difficult. In addition, discussion threads that are
advanced in the school discussion board are only meant and can be seen by those
students who have subscribed to the chat and post on the Discussion Board. For
instance, this post will be seen by all of you in this class and not other
students out of this class. However, on twitter, followership is pertinent to
viewing the post of other individuals. Albeit, tweets are viewable to a wider
range audience compared to class discussion Board. Lastly, in twitter not
replying to tweets immidietly can make things messy and untraceable, as such a
tweep intending to reply to tweet after some has got to use RT retweet and
include some words of the original tweet. This is not the case with class
discussion board., as one can reply to a discussion thread whatever time as
long as the discussion board is not closed.
Twitter discussions are definitely more open and carefree than in-class discussions or on Blackboard. Twitter allows us to express our opinions in any which way we would like, where Blackboard and in-class environments are more restrictive. Hashtags are a good tool to track discussions on Twitter which also allows a broader range of people to be engaged in them opposed to Blackboard and in-class discussions.
